AI email assistant comparison: 6 options for business email
This Shipmail-authored comparison uses published documentation checked October 31, 2026. We did not create accounts, connect mailboxes, or run a common workflow. It therefore compares documented plans, host requirements and stated draft or confirmation boundaries. It does not rank quality, safety, privacy, delivery, search accuracy or support.
Short answer
Choose an AI email assistant by where your mailbox lives and who controls the send step. Shipmail hosts business mail and includes a beta assistant. Superhuman, Shortwave and Fyxer add features to another mailbox. Outlook Copilot and Gmail Search AI Overviews depend on their suite, account and settings. This comparison reports vendor documentation checked October 31, 2026, not common-account test results.

Start with the mailbox and the send step
An AI email assistant can be a hosted mailbox feature, an add-on to an existing inbox, or a feature inside a work suite. These products solve different jobs. The price of an add-on does not replace the cost of the Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook or Microsoft 365 mailbox it needs.
For each option, ask four questions. Where does the mailbox live? Which plan unlocks the feature? Does the product document a draft, confirmation or send boundary? Which account, licence, tenant or settings must exist first? A documented feature is not a result from your mailbox.
Shipmail: hosted business mail with an included beta assistant
Shipmail hosts the business mailbox. Its beta assistant is included in paid plans and the 14-day trial. Current public prices are $4 monthly for Solo with 2 mailboxes, $9 for Pro with 4, and $29 for Team with 12. MCP is included with the plan. Taxes are extra.Sources[1]Shipmail pricing[2]Shipmail Assistant documentation
Assistant chat creates reply drafts for a person to review, edit and send. Separately, automations can send under an opt-in restricted policy in existing authenticated conversations. New recipients, new threads and other policy failures save a Draft instead. Higher-impact chat changes show confirmation cards. These controls do not establish content trust or draft correctness.Sources[2]Shipmail Assistant documentation[3]Shipmail automations documentation
For an external agent, the MCP Read and draft profile can read mail and calendars and create drafts, but cannot send. A mailbox-password approval keeps that connection to the selected mailbox. A dedicated address alone does not restrict an account-approved OAuth connection. The approved resources and permission profile do. Neither makes email content safe.[4]
Superhuman: an add-on to Gmail or Outlook
Superhuman Mail works inside an existing Gmail or Outlook inbox, so its subscription adds to the mailbox subscription. Its current Mail plan lists Starter at $25 per member per month on annual billing. Business is $33 per member per month on annual billing.Sources[5]Superhuman Mail plans[6]Superhuman Mail Email Assistant
Auto Drafts are a Business feature, not a Starter feature. Superhuman's help documentation says Auto Drafts appear as ordinary Gmail or Outlook drafts. The user can review, edit, send or delete them, and they do not send automatically.Sources[5]Superhuman Mail plans[6]Superhuman Mail Email Assistant
Use the $25 figure only as the entry price. It is not evidence that Starter includes Auto Drafts. Check the plan and the connected mailbox before a purchase, because this page did not test an account or a region.[5]
Shortwave: a Gmail-centered AI email app
Shortwave Business is listed at $30 per seat per month. Its provider documentation requires Gmail or Google Workspace. Other providers need forwarding into Gmail. Microsoft 365 and Exchange are unsupported, so the host-mailbox cost remains separate.Sources[7]Shortwave pricing[8]Shortwave: use Outlook and other providers
Shortwave documents AI help to write and improve drafts, search mail, organize the inbox and use filters. The cited guide does not establish a universal rule that every AI-created message is draft-only or that any message sends autonomously. Check the workflow and its approval settings before use.Sources[9]Shortwave AI assistant guide[7]Shortwave pricing
Shortwave's pricing page directs 24/7 workflow automation to Tasklet, its sister product. Treat that as a separate product decision, rather than a promise about the approval state of Shortwave's email assistant.[7]
Fyxer: draft-first assistance on Gmail or Outlook
Fyxer connects Gmail and Outlook. Its current public pricing lists Pro at $37 per person per month on annual billing. One paid seat can connect both inboxes. The existing mailbox subscription is additional.[10]
Fyxer's support documentation says it creates draft replies and does not send email on the user's behalf. Its MCP draft_email action writes a draft. The user opens it in Outlook or Gmail, reviews or edits it, then sends it. Microsoft 365 connections can require administrator approval.Sources[11]Fyxer permissions during setup[12]Fyxer MCP documentation
That is a documented send boundary, not a safety or quality finding. Check the connected-account setup and the required permissions in the tenant you plan to use.[11]
Microsoft Copilot in Outlook: confirm the tenant conditions
Microsoft's Outlook release notes describe natural-language deletion, moves, copies, categories, rules and folders. The cited note says Copilot requests confirmation before it acts on more than five emails or makes changes to inbox rules. That confirmation statement applies to the described Outlook triage action only.[13]
Microsoft separately documents a qualifying prerequisite licence, a Copilot licence for licensed capabilities, an Entra work or school account, Exchange Online for mailbox-grounded experiences, and a supported Outlook host. App, licence and tenant configuration can affect availability. This page does not state a feature-specific price for Outlook triage.Sources[14]Microsoft Copilot requirements[15]Microsoft Copilot license options
Gmail Search AI Overviews: eligibility is part of the product
Google's September rollout announcement describes English-language access on eligible Workspace editions and consumer Google AI plans. Current Help also lists personal-account access through Google Workspace Experiments. Check Google's current language and account requirements before use. Both smart-feature settings must be on. Workspace availability also depends on the documented Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access settings.Sources[16]Google Gmail Search AI Overviews update[17]Google Help: Get an AI Overview in Gmail search
Google says the feature is gradually rolling out. Its EEA, UK, Switzerland and Japan exclusion is for personal accounts. Google does not state the same exclusion for Workspace accounts. Search operators such as from: and is:unread do not show an AI Overview.Sources[16]Google Gmail Search AI Overviews update[17]Google Help: Get an AI Overview in Gmail search
No eligible account was checked for this comparison. Do not turn Google's rollout or eligibility documentation into a claim about search quality, completeness or availability in your mailbox.[17]
AgentMail and Cloudflare are infrastructure, not human email assistants
AgentMail documents an agent-first email API, a hosted MCP server and Agent Search. Its announcement describes REST and MCP search for ranked messages or threads, says retrieved content is untrusted, and limits a relevance-search page to 100 results. These are API workflow facts, not a replacement for a human email assistant.Sources[18]AgentMail: Introducing Agent Search[19]AgentMail MCP documentation[20]AgentMail pricing
Cloudflare documents a beta programmatic Email Service for inbound routing and transactional sending through Workers, REST or SMTP. Arbitrary-recipient sending requires Workers Paid. Current public pricing states 3,000 included outbound emails per account each month, then $0.35 per 1,000. It is not a hosted business mailbox or shared human inbox.Sources[21]Cloudflare Email Service for agents[22]Cloudflare Email Service overview[23]Cloudflare Email Service pricing
If you are building agent mail workflows, read the API guide instead of using this comparison as an implementation decision.
A practical selection checklist
- Step 1
Name the mailbox owner
Choose a hosted mailbox when the team needs email. Choose an add-on only when you will keep the existing host.
- Step 2
Name the paid feature gate
Write down the exact plan, billing period and any seat, licence or tenant condition. Do not compare an entry price with a Business-only feature.
- Step 3
Check the send boundary
Confirm whether the documented workflow creates a draft, requires confirmation, or can send. Treat unknown behavior as unknown.
- Step 4
Use a fictional corpus before real mail
Run the same ordinary and near-match tasks. Record the account, settings, result, reviewer and failures.
- Step 5
Keep incoming mail untrusted
A permission allows an action. It does not authorize instructions found in a message or prove that an output is correct.
This checklist is a decision aid based on the documented products. It is not a safety, delivery, privacy or quality test.Sources[4]Shipmail MCP permissions and security[18]AgentMail: Introducing Agent Search
