Does Google use your Gmail for ads? What changed on October 16, 2026
Nothing changes unless you connected your Google apps to Search. Below is the policy wording before and after the change, who it applies to, and where to switch it off. Every fact comes from Google's own privacy policy and help pages, checked on October 27, 2026.
Short answer
Only if you connect Gmail to Search. Since October 16, 2026, Google's privacy policy says Search may use data from apps you connect, including Gmail, to personalize content and ads. Google says ads are not based directly on your inbox, but summaries and inferences from it may be used. The connection is opt-in and needs a personal Google Account. Work and school accounts an organization manages cannot turn it on, and Google says Workspace does not use their content for advertising. Workspace Individual runs on a personal account, so it can connect.
What changed in Google's privacy policy
The version of October 12, 2026 said, without exception: "We don't show you personalized ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail, or Photos." The version effective October 16, 2026 adds one: unless you choose to make that data available to other services that support personalized ads.Sources[2]Google Privacy Policy, version of October 12, 2026[1]Google Privacy Policy, effective October 16, 2026
The same version says you can let services such as Search or Gemini Apps access data from Google Photos and Workspace apps like Gmail and Drive. It then states: "Search may process some of the data that you allow Search to access to personalize content, including ads."[1]
How Gmail data can reach an ad
The connection is part of Personal Intelligence. In Search Services Personalization, you connect Google Workspace, which includes Gmail, and Google Photos. The data then reaches every Search service: Search with AI Mode and Discover, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate and News.[3]
- Google says ads are not based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library.
- Summaries, excerpts and inferences from them may be used to personalize Search, and may also be used to show ads.
- Advertisers do not get access to your Gmail or Photos.
Who it applies to
Only people who connect their apps. Connecting needs a personal Google Account, an age of 18 or over, a supported country and language, and Personalized Recommendations turned on.[3]
- A personal Gmail account connected to Search: the new exception applies.
- A personal Gmail account that was never connected: nothing changes.
- A work or school account managed by an organization: Personal Intelligence is not available, and Google says Workspace does not use your content for advertising.
- Google Workspace Individual: it runs on a personal Google Account. Google says Workspace data you share with Search for Personal Intelligence follows Search's terms.
- The European Union, Switzerland and the United Kingdom: none is on Search's list of countries where you can connect apps, and Google's Gemini help page says Personal Intelligence is not available there.
How to check it and turn it off
Check two places, Search and the Gemini app, because each has its own list of connected apps. Disconnecting stops new data, but it does not delete what Search already saved.Sources[3]Google Search Help: connect your Google content apps[4]Gemini Apps Help: connect your Google apps
- Step 1
Search
In your Google Account, open Search Services Personalization. Under Additional Personal Intelligence, open Connected Content Apps and disconnect Google Workspace and Google Photos.
- Step 2
Gemini app
Open Personal Intelligence, then Connected Apps, and turn off Google Workspace. Turn off Google Photos too if it is on.
- Step 3
Gmail
Google's steps for connecting Gmail to Search include turning on Smart features in other Google products. Check that setting in Gmail under Settings, See all settings, General, then Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Step 4
History
Disconnecting does not delete data already in your Search Services History. Review and delete it at activity.google.com.
If you use Gmail for your business
On a Google Workspace account your company manages, nothing changes. Google states that Workspace does not collect, scan or use your content for advertising, and Personal Intelligence is not available for work accounts. The exception matters if you run a business from a personal @gmail.com address or from Workspace Individual, and connected it to Search.Sources[5]Google Workspace: how Gemini protects your data[4]Gemini Apps Help: connect your Google apps[6]Google Workspace Individual Help: learn about Workspace Individual
