Gandi custom domain email: what it costs and how to set up LiveDNS

Your domain is at Gandi and you want you@yourdomain to reach a real inbox. Gandi's domain page lists forwarding and aliases, and sells mailboxes on their own. Here is what Gandi charges now, how to change records in LiveDNS, Gandi's DNS service, and what to enter if you pick Shipmail. Gandi prices are US dollars for the United States, excluding taxes, checked on gandi.net on November 1, 2026.

Short answer

A Gandi domain comes with free email forwarding and aliases, but a mailbox is a separate purchase: Standard is $4.99 a month with 10GB, Premium $7.99 with 50GB and Business $9.99 with 100GB, US prices before tax. To use another provider, open Domain, your domain and the DNS Records tab in Gandi, replace Gandi's MX records and add the provider's TXT records.

What a Gandi domain includes

Gandi's domain page lists DNS, an SSL certificate for the first year, email forwarding and web forwarding as free with a domain, plus unlimited aliases. It does not list a free mailbox. Forwarding sends mail for you@yourdomain to an inbox you already have, such as Gmail; replying from your own address needs a mailbox somewhere.[2]

Gandi mailboxes: Standard, Premium and Business

  • Standard: from $4.99 a month, or $59.88 a year, with 10GB per mailbox.
  • Premium: from $7.99 a month, or $95.88 a year, with 50GB.
  • Business: from $9.99 a month, or $119.88 a year, with 100GB.

Gandi shows these prices for the United States, excluding taxes, and the price is per mailbox. Every plan has unlimited aliases, webmail and IMAP, POP and SMTP access. Gandi sells mailboxes for domains registered with it or elsewhere, and says there is no commitment.[1]

Gandi publishes its limits: 40 recipients per message from a mail app, 15 from webmail, and sending rates of 8,000 messages a day, 1,000 an hour and 200 a minute, given as is. Messages can be up to 25 MB, and Gandi does not host addresses on subdomains.Sources[5]Gandi docs: limits of Gandi's email service[3]Gandi docs: how to create an email address for your domain name

Shipmail on a Gandi domain

You can keep the domain at Gandi and host the mail at Shipmail. Shipmail charges per plan, not per mailbox: Solo is $4 a month for 2 mailboxes with 15 GB each, and 5 mailboxes cost $12 a month on Pro plus one extra mailbox. Five Gandi Standard mailboxes cost $24.95 a month before tax.Sources[6]Shipmail pricing[1]Gandi email pricing (US)

For a single mailbox, Gandi Standard costs less. Shipmail pulls ahead when you need several mailboxes, or want newsletters, booking pages, a catch-all and a team inbox in the same plan.Sources[6]Shipmail pricing[1]Gandi email pricing (US)[7]Shipmail newsletter editor documentation[8]Shipmail booking pages documentation[9]Shipmail catch-all docs[10]Shipmail shared inbox documentation

How to edit MX and TXT records in Gandi LiveDNS

These steps work when the domain uses Gandi's LiveDNS name servers. With an external name server, change the records at that provider. LiveDNS lets you save a backup of the zone first, which is worth one click before you touch mail records.[4]

  1. Step 1

    Add the domain in Shipmail

Add your domain in Shipmail. It lists the records to publish. Use Configure automatically if Shipmail offers it; otherwise copy the values by hand as below.

  2. Step 2

    Open the DNS Records tab

Log in to Gandi, click Domain in the left menu, click the domain name and open the DNS Records tab. Click Save a backup if you want a way back.

  3. Step 3

    Remove Gandi's mail records

Gandi's own mailboxes use MX records to spool.mail.gandi.net (priority 10) and fb.mail.gandi.net (priority 50), and an SPF record with include:_mailcust.gandi.net. Delete the two MX records with the red trash icon so mail isn't split between providers.

  4. Step 4

Add the new records in table mode

Click the green Add button above the table and choose MX: name @, priority 10, mx1.shipmail.to. Add each TXT record the same way, with @, shipmail._domainkey or _dmarc as the name. Edit Gandi's SPF record with the green pencil instead of adding a second one.

  5. Step 5

Wait for the check, then create mailboxes

Gandi's documentation allows up to 72 hours for DNS changes to take effect. Once Shipmail verifies the domain, create a mailbox for each address and add aliases for the rest.

The Shipmail records to add at Gandi

Shipmail asks for four records. The DKIM value is unique to your domain, so copy it from the Domains page in Shipmail.[12]

  • MX, host @, value mx1.shipmail.to, priority 10. It routes incoming mail to Shipmail.
  • TXT, host @, value v=spf1 include:spf.shipmail.to -all. This is SPF, the list of servers allowed to send for the domain.
  • TXT, host shipmail._domainkey, value: the DKIM key shown for your domain in Shipmail. It signs every message you send.
  • TXT, host _dmarc, value v=DMARC1; p=reject. DMARC tells receivers to refuse mail that fails SPF and DKIM.

If you keep a Gandi mailbox for a while, keep a single SPF record that carries both include:_mailcust.gandi.net and Shipmail's include. Two SPF records on one domain make both fail.Sources[3]Gandi docs: how to create an email address for your domain name[11]Shipmail domain setup documentation
