Custom domain email with Squarespace Domains: options, prices and DNS setup
Your domain is with Squarespace, maybe because it came over from Google Domains. Squarespace will sell you a mailbox or forward mail for free, and any other provider works through its DNS settings. Prices are US dollars from Squarespace's own help center, checked on November 1, 2026.
Short answer
Squarespace offers three kinds of email for its domains: free forwarding for up to 100 aliases, Essential Email by Titan at $3 a month, and Google Workspace from $8.40 a user a month or $84 a year. To use another provider, open the domain, click DNS, then DNS Settings, delete any email preset and add the provider's MX and TXT records. Shipmail is $4 a month for 2 mailboxes.

What Squarespace sells for email
Squarespace's mailboxes come from two partners, Google and Titan, billed on your Squarespace account. On domains it manages, it also forwards mail for free.Sources[2]Squarespace Help: choose an email provider for your Squarespace domain[1]Squarespace: professional email
- Email forwarding: free on Squarespace-managed domains, up to 100 aliases, each rule forwarding to one address. It isn't an inbox.
- Essential Email by Titan: one Basic plan at $3 a month with 10 GB and 10 aliases. Squarespace bills it monthly only, and the domain must be registered with Squarespace and use its default name servers.
- Google Workspace: Starter, Standard and Plus at $8.40, $16.80 and $26.40 per user a month, or $84, $168 and $264 a year. Prices may be subject to sales tax.
Squarespace's email page says the first year of Workspace Starter is included with a Core or higher website plan, and runs a limited-time discount on the first payment of a new annual seat. How to add MX and TXT records in Squarespace
Squarespace has presets for some email providers, including Google Workspace, Titan Email, Fastmail, iCloud, Proton Mail and Zoho Mail. A preset's records can't be edited, only deleted. For any other provider, you add custom records.[7]
- Step 1
Open DNS Settings
Open the domains dashboard, choose the domain, click DNS, then DNS Settings.
- Step 2
Delete the old email preset
If a Google Workspace or Titan preset is there, delete it with the trash can icon. If you sign in to Squarespace with an address at this domain, change your account email first, or you won't receive the code to put the records back.
- Step 3
Add the MX record
Click Add record, choose MX, enter
@in Name, the provider's number in Priority (0 to 255) and its server in Mail Server. Save. - Step 4
Add the TXT records
Under Custom Records, click Add record and choose TXT. Enter the host from your provider, or
@for the root, and paste the value in Text. For DMARC, enter_dmarcwithout your domain; Squarespace adds it. Leave out quotation marks. - Step 5
Wait for the records to work
Squarespace says a saved record can take up to 48 hours to work. Custom records have a 4-hour TTL by default.
Squarespace says a domain with a custom email address should set up forwarding at its email provider, not in Squarespace. Recreate your Squarespace forwarding rules as aliases at the new provider.[5]
Point a Squarespace domain at Shipmail
Add the domain in Shipmail first. Shipmail recognises Squarespace DNS and shows its steps next to the records. Use Configure automatically if Shipmail offers it; otherwise add these four records as custom records. Keep one SPF record for the domain and put any other sender's include in it.Sources[10]Shipmail domain setup documentation[11]Shipmail DNS setup docs: DMARC record
- MX, host
@, valuemx1.shipmail.to, priority 10. It routes incoming mail to Shipmail. - TXT, host
@, valuev=spf1 include:spf.shipmail.to -all. This is SPF, the list of servers allowed to send for the domain. - TXT, host
shipmail._domainkey, value: the DKIM key shown for your domain in Shipmail. It signs every message you send. - TXT, host
_dmarc, valuev=DMARC1; p=reject. DMARC tells receivers to refuse mail that fails SPF and DKIM.
In Squarespace, enter shipmail._domainkey and _dmarc without your domain on the end. Shipmail rechecks the records every 30 seconds and verifies the domain once they resolve. Plans start at $4 a month for 2 mailboxes; five mailboxes cost $12 a month on Pro plus one extra mailbox, against $42 a month for five Workspace Starter seats billed monthly through Squarespace.Sources[10]Shipmail domain setup documentation[9]Shipmail pricing[7]Squarespace Help: add DNS records for email[4]Squarespace Help: Google Workspace pricing, billing and invoices
