Connect ChatGPT to your email with the Shipmail MCP server

In ChatGPT Plugins, add a custom MCP server with the URL https://shipmail.to/api/mcp and OAuth, then sign in to Shipmail. ChatGPT can then read, draft and send email from a mailbox on your own domain, within the permissions you chose.

Whether you can add a custom MCP server depends on your ChatGPT plan and, in a workspace, on what your admin allows. OpenAI's help center lists who has access.

Connect Shipmail

  1. Open ChatGPT Plugins

Go to Plugins in ChatGPT, select the + button, then Add custom MCP server.

    Open ChatGPT Plugins
  2. Enter the server

Name it Shipmail. Under Connection, enter https://shipmail.to/api/mcp as the server URL and pick OAuth for authentication. Read the risk warning, confirm, and select Create as a plugin.

  3. Sign in on Shipmail

ChatGPT sends you to the Shipmail sign-in page. Pick what ChatGPT may do: Read and draft, Set up, Mail assistant, Full access, or Custom. Grant Send mail only if ChatGPT should send.

  4. Install it and use it in a chat

Install the plugin, start a new conversation, type @ in the prompt box and pick Shipmail.

ChatGPT connects to Shipmail with OAuth only. OpenAI documents no field for a bearer header, so there is no API key path. To keep ChatGPT to one mailbox, sign in with that mailbox's address and password instead of your account.

First prompts to try

  • "@Shipmail List the unread mail in agent@yourdomain.com from today and say which messages need me."
  • "@Shipmail Draft a reply to the latest email from jane@customer.com saying the order ships Friday. Do not send it."
  • "@Shipmail Find every thread with acme.com this month and summarize what is still open."

Open the mailbox in Shipmail. The draft sits in the same conversation, ready to edit and send. Shipmail can also start ChatGPT on its own when new mail arrives, through events and automations.

Stay safe

  • Start with Read and draft. ChatGPT can read mail and write drafts, and the send tools are not listed at all.
  • Give ChatGPT its own mailbox, like agent@yourdomain.com, and approve with that mailbox's password. Your own inbox stays out of reach.
  • Read each confirmation. OpenAI says ChatGPT asks before write actions, and Shipmail marks every tool that changes something, sending included, as a write.
  • Treat every email as untrusted input. A message can carry text written to look like an instruction. OpenAI warns about prompt injection from connected servers too.
  • Revoke the connection under Developer, then Connections, to cut access at once.

Troubleshooting

  • Add custom MCP server is missing: your plan or workspace does not allow custom servers. Ask your workspace admin.
  • A tool is missing: the connection does not allow it. Widen the permissions under Developer, then Connections, open the server in ChatGPT Plugins and select Refresh, then start a new conversation.
  • ChatGPT cannot find a mailbox: the connection is limited to another mailbox or organization. Check the resources you granted under Developer, then Connections.
  • ChatGPT asks you to sign in again: reconnect from ChatGPT Plugins and check the permissions on the Shipmail sign-in page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect ChatGPT with a Shipmail API key?

OpenAI documents OAuth and no authentication for custom MCP servers, and no field for a bearer header. Use OAuth. To keep ChatGPT to one mailbox, sign in on the Shipmail page with that mailbox's address and password.

Will ChatGPT send email without asking?

Not by default. OpenAI says ChatGPT asks for confirmation before write actions, and every Shipmail tool that changes something is marked as a write. With Read and draft, the send tools are not listed at all.

Why do I not see Add custom MCP server?

Custom MCP servers depend on your ChatGPT plan, and in a workspace on what the admin allows. OpenAI's help center lists who has access today. Ask your workspace admin if the option is missing.

Can ChatGPT set up my domain and mailboxes?

Yes. Pick Set up on the Shipmail sign-in page. ChatGPT can then add your domain and mailboxes and read their configuration, but it cannot read or send mail, issue passwords or pay.

How do I disconnect ChatGPT?

In Shipmail, open Developer, then Connections, and revoke the ChatGPT connection. ChatGPT loses access at once, even if its token has not expired.
